Mission

• To register the Seri-genetic resources in India
• Research activity facilitating utilization of Seri-genetic resources for crop improvement programme, conservation of Seri-genetic resources, national posterity and prevention of extinction.

Strategies for Mulberry & Silkworm Germplasm Conservation

• Introduction of exotic mulberry species and silkworm breeds through NBPGR, New Delhi / International Sericulture Commission, CSB Complex, Bangalore.
• Identification of germplasm with specific functional traits for resilience to climate change.
• Implementation of structured and sustainable on-farm and in situ conservation of landraces in their native agro-ecological environments.
• Adoption of eco-friendly and organic farming techniques for ex-situ
• Identification of promising genes in wild and land races using molecular tools for utilization in pre-breeding programme for genetic enhancement.
• Utilization of molecular tools for screening Seri-genetic resources for tolerance to different abiotic stresses / functional traits by including genomics as an essential mandate of the centre.
• Mechanization in host plant cultivation and silkworm rearing for drudgery reduction.
• Upgradation of ex situ conservation strategies for mulberry and silkworm gene banks adopting advanced tools like cryopreservation and DNA preservation with back up for cost effective conservation and to ensure safety against natural calamities.
• Evaluation of Seri-genetic resources for non-sericultural purposes viz., pharmaceutical, biomaterial, paramedical, etc., with external collaboration dedicated for specific fields.
• Establishing strong linkages with other countries through ISC, NBPGR, NBAIR, NBA etc. for direct introduction of germplasm under exchange programme and for offering training in germplasm management.
• Development of National Database of Seri-genetic Resources with molecular IDs along with characterization and evaluation data.
