From Director’s Desk

The Central Sericultural Germplasm Resources Centre (CSGRC) plays a crucial role in conserving both mulberry and silkworm germplasm in India. This centre focuses on collection, characterization, evaluation and conservation of Seri-genetic resources for long term sustainability of the sericulture industry. The centre was established in 1990 as a premier facility under Central Silk Board to serve as a national repository for sericultural germplasm ensuring the conservation and sustainable utilization of valuable genetic resources for posterity.

CSGRC has been constantly carrying research activity for sustainable management of Seri-genetic resources in India. The centre is conserving 1317 mulberry and 489 silkworm accessions systematically. Over the past years, the centre has conducted extensive survey for collecting valuable genetic resources. The collected Seri-genetic resources are systematically characterized and evaluated for identifying promising accessions. The diverse collection of germplasm accessions helps breeders in selecting potential parents for their crop improvement and hybridization program.

As a result of the concerted efforts, CSGRC was recognized as a National Active Germplasm Site by the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBPGR), New Delhi for mulberry and National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources (ICAR-NBAIR), Bengaluru for Silkworm.

The centre also facilitates documentation and registration of unique Seri-germplasm. CSGRC maintains MGIS (Mulberry Germplasm Information System (MGIS) and SGIS (Silkworm Germplasm Information System) database to document germplasm information facilitating access and utilization. The team CSGRC will continue its dedicated efforts in conserving the Seri-germplasm and contribute to the development of sericulture industry in India.

The information shared on this website reflects the diligence, dedication, and teamwork of our scientists, technicians, administrative personnel and supporting staff. We encourage you to explore our site and discover the invaluable contributions of our centre to the sustainable growth of the sericulture industry.
